Muay Thai Amateur Fights Singapore

I went to support my Gym - Suphanahong at the Muay Thai Amateur fights on Sunday at the new FightWorks Gym on the ECP. It was great to see alot of support for the different fighters close to 150 people. And more importantly it was a successful event from the point of view that 4 of our 7 Suphanahong fighters won their fights quite convincingly. The other 2 were beaten and outclassed while 1 went down in a tough points decision. Overall, I would summarise the fights as a mixed bag of Aggression, Brawling, Grappling and inconsistent technique. The level of fitness was average and is the obvious key to stepping into the ring. Some fighters seemed to be tentative, while others were overly aggressive and won by throwing the most punches and kicks without any real technique - Overpowering their less experienced and scared opponents.

So what does it take to win a fight in this situation.
  1. Three x Two Minute Rounds
  2. One Minute break
  3. Full Padding - Elbows, Shins, Head and Chest.
Judges generally awarded points for kicks, takedowns, control and damage. If you can Stun your opponent - you should win the fight. If you smell Blood - You need to go in for the Kill. The Fight will continue and very few times was a fight stopped even if a fighter carried on. Fight with intent to Punish.

Fighters generally used straight punches and Leg or Body Kicks. Push Kicks and some knees in the clinch.
Few used Elbows, Sweep Kicks, Flying Knees, Side Kicks or High Kicks. Even Uppercuts and Hooks. Overhands and body shots.

What were some of the most effective scoring techniques to turn a decision in favor from the Judges.
  • The cartwheel kick!
  • Spinning Back Kick!
  • Low Leg Kick.
  • Not getting Hit.
  • Overpowering your Opponent to the Mat.
What would I have used ?
  • Superman Punch
  • Takedown Clinch
  • High Kick
  • Side Kick
  • Double Kick
  • Knees to Legs
Close the distance and strike till your opponent is hurt and then move out. Be accurate with your shots and stay under control. Moves should be precise, definitive and strong. You must capitalise on openings. But you must concentrate extremely hard to see them. When the guard is dropped from a certain technique the timing must be immaculate to counter these moves.

Can you win with a straight Right? Yes. But dont fall in love with it.

Get the crowd on your side. Like it or not - Spectacular moves do get points if pulled off. So a spinning backhand that connects will earn points. As will a double spinning kick...

More training is required...

31st of March awaits!
